Hot Air Balloon Ride in Marrakech: What to Expect
Pickup times, how long you fly, what happens if the wind is too strong and how to choose your season — everything before you book.
Short answer: a Marrakech balloon flight starts with a pickup before dawn, lasts about one hour in the air at sunrise over the villages and plains north-east of the city, and ends with a Berber breakfast. You are back at your riad by late morning.
How the morning goes
Pickup is very early — between about 5:00 and 6:30 depending on the season — because the flight follows the sunrise. At the take-off site you have tea while the crew inflates the balloon, then you climb into the basket and lift off as the sky turns pink behind the Atlas.
The flight lasts around an hour. The pilot drifts with the wind over palm groves, Berber villages and the stony plains, sometimes rising high enough to see the snowy peaks. After landing, the crew packs the balloon and you share a traditional breakfast in a tent: msemen, honey, olive oil, eggs and mint tea.
What if the weather is bad?
Balloons only fly in calm conditions. If the pilot decides the wind or rain is not safe — usually announced the evening before or at the site — the flight is cancelled and you can choose another morning or a refund. That is why we suggest booking it early in your stay.
Best season
Flights run all year. Winter mornings (December–February) are cold before sunrise but often crystal clear, with snow on the Atlas. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. In summer, sunrise is very early but the air is calm.
What to wear and bring
- Warm layers you can remove — it is cold at dawn and warms up fast.
- Closed shoes; landing fields can be stony.
- A hat for the burner's heat and the morning sun.
- Your phone or camera on a strap.
