Merzouga or Zagora? Choosing Your Sahara Night from Marrakech
Big golden dunes or a shorter drive? An honest comparison of the two desert destinations you can reach from Marrakech.
Short answer: choose Merzouga if you want the big, golden Sahara dunes and have at least 3 days. Choose Zagora if you only have 2 days and are happy with smaller dunes and a stony desert landscape.
Distance and time
| Zagora | Merzouga | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Marrakech | about 360 km | about 560 km |
| Driving time (one way) | 6–7 hours | 9–10 hours |
| Minimum trip | 2 days / 1 night | 3 days / 2 nights |
| Dunes | Small dunes, rocky desert | Erg Chebbi, dunes up to 150 m |
Zagora: the short desert escape
The road to Zagora follows the Draa valley, Morocco's longest palm grove, lined with kasbahs and ksour. The desert around Zagora is mostly stony, with small dune fields where the camps are set. You still get the camel ride at sunset, the dinner under the stars and the silence — just not the towering sand mountains of the postcards.
It is the right choice for travellers with only two days in Marrakech. See our 2-day Zagora desert tour.
Merzouga: the "real" Sahara
Erg Chebbi near Merzouga is the iconic sea of dunes: orange sand that changes colour through the day, dunes high enough to climb for sunrise, and camps hidden between them. The trip is longer, but the road itself — the Dadès and Todra gorges, the kasbahs — is part of the experience.
Our 3-day Merzouga tour is the classic; with four days you can end in Fès on the Sahara Line.
And if you have only one day?
Neither is possible in a day trip. For a desert atmosphere close to Marrakech, the Agafay desert sunset and dinner is just 40 minutes away — a stone desert with views of the Atlas.
